Frequently Asked Questions
What is available for young people?
Scratton lodge is the largest house at Fairbridge, sleeping 56. It is divided into two wings with the kitchen and dining area in the middle. Each wing has its own bathroom. This is reserved for the young people. Each evening a meditation will be held in Scratton after supper. Those aged 16 (turning 16 by the end of the year of the camp) and over are eligible to book in to Scratton. Young people are encouraged to support each other and develop stronger relationships by going together in one house.
What is available for children?
Childminding may be provided during the morning studies on Friday, Saturday and Monday for those under 4 (depending on numbers). Usually we have three Sunday School classes, those aged between 4 and 6, those aged between 7 and 9, those aged between 10 and 12 and those aged between 13 and 15/16 (age groups are subject to change depending on numbers). Where possible they do lessons that are aligned with the theme of the weekend and lots of exciting creations are made. Sunday School class ages are based on the age the child turns by 31 December, not the age they are at the camp.
How do I work out which fee to pay for my children?
Fees are calculated based on the age the child turns by 31 December. For example, if your child turns 6 in October you would pay the 6-15 year old's rate.
Can children under 18 attend without their parents?
It is preferred that a close relative is also attending, e.g. grandparent. In the event that the child is attending the camp in the company of another family (other than parents or grandparents) or staying in the young people's house (16 and over), the fee is $100 as the children's fees are heavily subsidised.
How does the family fee work?
Family fees are capped at $600 to assist those with larger families. This only includes children who are still at school. The fees for those aged over 17 would be calculated separately.
Do I have to do a group booking to book in?
No, single bookings are most welcome.
How is the weekend catered for?
Each house provides its own catering, with the exception of the communal meal on Saturday evening. Morning teas and suppers are provided and so is bread and milk for each house for the weekend. Each house has its own kitchen facilities. To try and make this easier for those attending, several meals have been put on which can be booked into at an additional cost. This includes Friday dinner and Saturday lunch. Bookings are essential. A communal meal is available for all on the Saturday evening (no extra cost).
Can I day visit?
Day visitors are welcome. $5 per person, $15 per family.
Do I need to pay a deposit?
Yes, a $50 non-refundable deposit is payable with your application form. If you are doing a group booking, this applies to each family.
Am I guaranteed to get the house I nominated on my application form?
Where possible, we try to allocate people to their preferred house. However, it will be done on a first in first served basis and priority will be given to those who have filled their house.
If I do a group booking do I need to fill my house?
Yes, each house will need to be filled. This year we have a number of less houses, which has been part of the negotiations with Fairbridge to try and keep the camp viable and affordable. This means we will need to make an extra effort to maximise the accommodation and where possible to fill the houses. Please note, that while it is ideal if you fill your house, it is ok to still book in if your nominated house still has spare bedrooms! We just ask that you please be open to other people being placed in your house if asked.
If I can only attend some of the camp can I pay a reduced fee?
No, The fee cannot be reduced if you are unable to stay the whole camp as we pay a set fee to hire the campsite and Fairbridge does not reduce its fees based on nights a bed is not used.
